This is one of my favorite flowers in the whole world, photographed in my garden - she is delicate and bold all at the same time... not quite like all the rest in ways that inexplicably draw you to her - nigella damascena, otherwise known as Love-in-a-Mist.
When you see her, you will want to hold on to her always, drinking in every angle and curve, absorbing all of her confusing yet somehow perfectly complimentary elements. Can't she just be yours forever? You long to keep her, but it is simply not possible. In time, she will transform into an equally lovely, but very dry, seedpod. Holding onto all the life she has ever gathered inside of her, she will bide her time. You will hear her shake and whisper, sometimes rattling, in the wind when it comes, as she stands. But stand she will.
She is strong, though eventually she will break, releasing everything she ever was to the wind, letting each piece of her land where it will; in this last act, she will both release all of her gathered burdens and pass life gloriously on.
